VLSI Architectures of a Wiener Filter for Video Coding

In the modern age, use of video has become fundamental in communication and this led to its through an increasing number devices. The higher resolution required for images videos leads more memory space efficient data compression, obtained by improving coding techniques. For reason, Alliance Open Media (AOMedia) developed a new open-source royalty-free codec, named AOMedia Video 1 (AV1). This work focuses on Wiener filter, specific loop restoration tool AV1 format, which features significant amount computational complexity. A hardware architecture implementing separable symmetric normalized filter is presented. Furthermore, paper details possible optimizations starting from basic architecture. These allow achieve 100× reduction processing time, compared existing works, 5× improvement megasamples per second.

Two different models for transcoding of H.263-based video streams are examined: rate reduction and resolution reduction. Results show that the computational complexity of the basic transcoding model can be reduced for each model by an average of 39% and 23% with less than 1 dB loss in quality for sequences with high motion.
